I've been in Penang for a few days now. Specifically, Georgetown, which I'm not too fond of. I didn't realise it is a massive grimy city.
Amy and her fiance and child were staying here in rather more luxurious circumstances, so I've met up with them the last 2 nights. She told me about a place that sells really cheap beers, so we went there and it happens to be a 15 second walk from my hostel.
It is basically an off licence with a big fat guy with no shirt running the place. You buy your beer then go next door and grab a chair from a stack out the front and sit in the street. Last night it was borderline shutting the street down when a police van rolled up and stopped. They ran in, bought some beers and left!
Tonight I decided to walk to Gurney Drive. I read that there was street food here. It was a bit of a trek but I found the place and I'm happy to see that I'm the only westerner here. I got a prawn omelette and it was the best food I've had so far in Asia.
Tomorrow I go to Batu Ferringhi for 2 nights and then I'm flying up to Langkawi.
