Bayeux again

The light show I was going to go to last night wasn't on. It is only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. So I stuck around today for it. The actual reason I stuck around was because I was too lazy to get up this morning and it was a really sunny day - good for swimming, not for riding.

So when I did get up I went to find the pool and discovered it is a public indoor pool that happens to be next to the camp ground. So bugger that. Instead I decided to search for a river or pond to swim in. I found a nice canal and followed it for a while but it stayed a canal.

I ended up in town so got some lunch and looked for a park to eat it in. I rode towards some trees and ate on a grassy patch I found. When I'd finished I realised that I was back in the camp ground at the other end and the building I was near was actually the other side of the swimming pool. That's my sense of direction for you. I fully expect to arrive back in Australia through Heathrow airport. So I rode 50 metres back to my tent.

I spent all afternoon reading my book and charging my stuff. Almost through my 5th book. There is a TV room right next to where I'm camped so I've unplugged the tele and plugged my stuff in. Nobody watches TV anymore. Occasionally I'd go in to check on my stuff and there has been these two teenage boys in there using the other plugs, watching stuff on their phones for the past 16 hours. They're still there now.

Tonight I went to see the light show and it was amazing. So glad I stayed an extra day for it. Well worth it. Basically, they project onto a massive plane tree that sits behind the cathedral called the tree of liberty. It was planted in 1797 and is kind of a bug deal. The spoken parts of the show were mostly in French but the music and lights were brilliant. I recorded some of it so will try to get it on YouTube to share.

I was sat right at the front in the perfect spot. When I got up to leave I didn't realise that a few thousand people had joined so I really did have a good spot. Lots of other people were taking photos too. I know this because of all the flashes going off. At a light show. Sometimes I forget how many stupid dummies there are amongst us.

On the way back it was pitch black and I didn't take a light. The path back runs along the canal. Luckily a couple on bikes were ahead of me with lights so I followed them really closely. I still couldn't see anything but at least they showed where the path went. I definitely would have ended up in the canal otherwise. Me following them freaked them right out. They lost me at one point but I caught them.

Tomorrow I'm going to get up early (ha), ride back to the coast and make my way along to Carentan. In Call of Duty 1 there is a map based on Carentan and in it there are some bushes just outside the town where you can hide and shoot people. This is called "camping" and it is a hated tactic in multiplayer video games. Anyway, if they're really there (they also exist in the episode of Band of Brothers set in Carentan) I might camp in them for real. And use a stick to shoot people walking by. If there are no sticks I'll just have to pretend...

  2. YouTube copyright blocked one video of the tree (the best one). The other has been uploading for 3 days now so hopefully it won't get blocked too!
