Last night I went for pizza and afterwards decided to go get groceries. I couldn't find a supermarket so I ducked my head into a pub and asked for directions. The people in there asked me to have a beer with them and I ended up staying and drinking with the owner for free. The owners mate who had invited me to stay started making all these big plans to show me around Budapest and stuff. He was drunk so I took it with a grain of salt.
He also decided that I should come on a trip to Eger on Saturday with him, his girlfriend and some other mates. He has a friend who owns a winery and they are having a party to celebrate the grape harvest. Naturally I said I'll definitely go. I'm fairly sure he arranged and paid for my accomodation in Eger Saturday night. We exchanged numbers and added each other on facebook. I really wasn't sure how serious he was but figured I'd see if he gets in contact today. He didn't. So I'm not sure if I'm going to Eger tomorrow or not, but I'd say not. I'll catch up with him in Budapest regardless.
I didn't stay out too late last night despite the free booze, but was still really tired this morning. I rode to Esztergom today. The ride was horrendous. Terrible bike paths and terrible roads. The bike paths were really bumpy. The roads weren't, they were just full of trucks and we're very busy.
I got to the camp ground in Esztergom and it was shut for the year. I went to find another one but it didn't exist. So I went on hostelworld and found a hostel for 10 pounds. I booked it then went there. When I arrived I got turned away because they were full. She said "you shouldn't have been able to book" as though I had done something wrong. So I am at a guest house she recommended. It is 25 euros. I wrote hostelworld a big sob story about how I was embarrassed at being turned away and forced to wander the streets with my luggage, not knowing if I could find somewhere else. I'm hoping they will cover the cost of the guest house, or reimburse the difference. If they look carefully they might notice what time I had made the booking. I was already wandering the streets with nowhere to stay for most of the day. In fact I only had about 10 minutes between booking the place then arriving and being turned away.
There is a food and wine festival on in Esztergom. I went down for a look tonight. I only stayed for less than an hour as I'm really tired. There was a band playing who were pretty good, except for the lead singer. I don't know what they are saying so I tend to judge the bands I've seen by everything other than the singing. This band sounded a bit like the Foo Fighters. Except for the lead singer. He wasn't too bad but he definitely seemed like the weak link, strutting around on stage with his big bag of attitude.
The streets around the stage were lined with all different street food vendors and wine stalls. I had already eaten before I knew this thing was on but hopefully it is in tomorrow too. From that little snippet of Esztergom it seems like a cool little city. It has the biggest cathedral in Hungary. I don't know if that's good. I'm looking forward to having a look around tomorrow before edging my way closer to Budapest. If I don't go to Eger.
